History of local government in Wilsden and Harecroft

The Wilsden Vestry Meeting unanimously decided to elect a Local Board of twelve members in 1865 and the village became an Urban Disrict in 1894. In 1896, Bingley Urban District applied to adjust its boundaries to include Wilsden. The Wilsden Board fought hard but in vain to keep its independence and now had a representation of only three members on Bingley Council. In 1974 this too was absorbed into the huge Bradford Metropolitan District Council and the three councillors for Bingley Rural ward represented much more than Wilsden.

Wilsden Village Society, formed in 1970, saw a large part of its role as being a watchdog and a strong voice for the village. It also set out to provide a new focal point for community activities in the shape of the village hall, to revive former social activities and encourage new ones.

In 2004 we have seen the formation of a Parish Council to represent the interests of this distinct community.
